How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

If you're still changing your oil every 3,000 miles, you might be wasting money. Modern engines and synthetic oils have changed the game — but Florida's heat adds a twist.

The Modern Standard

Most modern vehicles using synthetic oil can safely go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between oil changes. Some newer models with oil life monitors can go up to 10,000 miles. Always check your owner's manual first.

The Florida Factor

Here in Tampa Bay, our hot climate puts extra stress on your engine oil. High temperatures cause oil to break down faster. If you frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, tow heavy loads, or make lots of short trips, you may need to change your oil more often.

Signs You Need an Oil Change Now

  • Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick (healthy oil is amber-colored)
  • Engine running louder than usual
  • Oil change light on your dashboard
  • You can't remember the last time you changed it
  • Synthetic vs. Conventional

Synthetic oil costs more upfront but lasts longer and protects better in extreme heat. For Florida drivers, synthetic is usually the smarter choice — you'll actually save money in the long run with fewer changes.
