Why You Should Never Ignore Your Check Engine Light

We get it — the check engine light comes on and you think, "It's probably nothing." But ignoring it can turn a minor fix into a major repair bill.

What the Check Engine Light Means

Your car's onboard computer (OBD-II system) constantly monitors your engine, emissions, and related systems. When it detects something outside normal parameters, it triggers the check engine light and stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Common Causes

  • Loose gas cap — The simplest fix. Tighten it and see if the light goes off after a few driving cycles.
  • Oxygen sensor failure — Affects fuel economy and can damage your catalytic converter over time.
  • Catalytic converter issues — Often caused by neglecting other problems. Can cost $1,000+ to replace.
  • Mass airflow sensor — Affects fuel mixture and performance.
  • Spark plugs or ignition coils — Cause misfires and poor fuel economy.
  • Solid vs. Flashing Light

  • Solid light: Something needs attention, but it's not an emergency. Schedule a visit soon.
  • Flashing light: This is urgent — usually means an engine misfire that could damage the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and call for a tow.
  • Free Towing with Repair

If your check engine light is flashing and you're in the Tampa Bay area, remember — we offer free towing with any repair, or your first 5 miles free. Don't risk further damage by driving.
